The site from where Marconi received the first wireless transatlantic signal in 1901, ushering-in the modern era of telecommunications. Signal Hill is just a 5-minute walk from the hotel. The largest park in St. John's, Pippy Park, offers hiking, cross-country skiing, picnic areas, a fully equipped campground, and two golf courses. Within the park boundaries is the Memorial University Botanical Gardens at Oxen Pond. The site has been developed to display plants suitable to the local climate. Nature trails and guided walks are offered from May to October. The most easterly point in North America, Cape Spear was used by U.S. troops to observe German submarine activity during World War II.
